The political situation in Libya is beginning to stabilize and head in the right direction as the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) gains more political support, placing the eastern government under increased international pressure to vote in confidence of Fayez al-Sarraj’s government, and the threat of ISIS diminishes.

The eastern government’s House of Representatives (HOR) is seeing division amongst its members with some giving their support for a united country. The United States and Europe are giving their support for an internationally recognized parliamentary session to be held in a safe location other than Tobruk in order to establish a vote of confidence in the presidential committee and the GNA.

In addition to its political gains, Libya is seeing an increase in security following the defeat of ISIS in Benghazi and the terrorist group’s loss of control in the city of Darnah and among the Sarat tribes which demonstrate ISIS’ weakened position in the country, including its withdrawal from the Bin Jawad region and their move to Sarat.

The people of Libya have witnessed the brutality and religious extremism of ISIS, and all armed and civilian political forces have denounced the terrorist group, however, the threat of ISIS in Libya still remains a primary issue. The United States, and other western countries have promised to help Libya in securing its borders and defeating ISIS.

While Libya still faces many obstacles in securing a centralized authority under the GNA, the promise of political support both internationally and locally show that the country is taking a step in the right direction.
